The Oakton team lost their first district game of the season at Westfield.

Though the Cougars were making contact with the ball, Bulldog senior pitcher, Alex Tenney, and her team mates did not allow a Cougar hit until the third inning when Emily Corridon singled.  The Lady Cougars got their bats contacting in the fourth, but the Bulldogs fielded each infield grounder for an out.  Finally in the fifth, things opened up for the Cougars for their only scoring opportunities of the game.  Becky Cerva singled, followed by Kelsea Sinnett.  Angie Noviello reached on error, allowing Becky Cerva to slide home.  Slap hitter Mary Kate Mehegan plated Sinnett with a sacrifice.  Corridon then reached on an overthrow, plating Noviello for the Cougars’ third and final run.

Defensively the Cougars had a challenging game.  The Bulldogs lead-off batter, senior Jackie Martinez, reached on error and advanced to 3rd.  The following batter laid down a bunt, and Martinez came home, putting Westfield on the score board in the bottom of the first.  Westfield came prepared to hit and managed to get their lead-off batter on base and later crossing the plate in each of the first 3 innings.  The Bulldogs scored 4 runs in the first 3 innings, and held their lead the remainder of the game.  They scored 3 runs in the last 2 innings for a final score of 7-3.  Not a single Bulldog batter struck out all night; and they took advantage of any Cougar miscue by either getting on base, advancing runners, or coming across the plate to dominate the game.

Defensive highlights include catcher Mandy Krage throwing out Frankie Martinez who attempted to steal 3rd.  Some nice glove work was seen by Allison Davis fielding bunts while the Bulldogs attempted short ball.  Also, 2 deep catches by centerfielder Corridon eliminated a few scoring opportunities.

After pitching 9 complete games this season, freshman pitcher Allison Davis left the game with an injury in the bottom of the fifth inning.  Freshmen Becky Cerva came in to finish the game.

The Lady Cougars play at Herndon on Friday, April 29 at 6:30.  They continue with their final 2 Hayfield Tournament games on Saturday at 3 and 5 pm.  Hope to see you cheering on our Cougar softball team!
