Cougars final

Game Date
May 13, 2011
Score
COUGARS: 1
WESTFIELD HIGH: 14

The Cougars faced district rival Westfield for their closing district game of the season.  We honored our only senior, Jory Yates, with a special presentation prior to the game.  The girls surprised Jory with posters, which were hung on the dug out, and the field was decorated with burgundy and gold balloons.  After the game, Jory received special gifts and a beautiful cake that was shared with the team and families.  It was a special night for Jory, with several of her friends and extended family coming to cheer her on!

The Cougars took the diamond and Alana Peters was on the mound.   After 4 batters, and a score of 2-0, Abby Mills came in.  Unfortunately Oakton had a very difficult first inning with the Bulldogs getting through their batting order and then some.  Five got on base with walks, five with good hits, and one on error.  They managed to score a total of 9 runs mostly due to Cougar errors, passed balls, and missed pitches.  Fortunately the Cougars regrouped and held them to a single hit with no runs in the second.  In the third, with two hits and taking advantage of defensive misplays, they scored an additional run.  However, the Cougars fought back by catching a runner out on an attempt to steal home.  Seeing five batters in the fourth, the first two were out with pops to left field and first.  The third batter singled, and was plated by a triple RBI by #8, Jackie Martinez.  In the fifth and final inning, Haley French came to the mound.  Three of the first four batters reached on error, and another had a single.  They added an additional 3 runs for a final score of 14.  Defensive highlights included some nice saves by Emily Corridon and Allison Davis in the field.

The Cougars started with lead-off Emily Corridon reaching on a walk, and the next three batters did not get on base.  In the second, no Cougars reached.  In the third, senior Jory Yates reached on error, and Corridon reached on a fielder’s choice, but the Cougars could not score.  In the fourth, French reached on a walk, followed by Mills reaching on error with an RBI to plate French, the first and only run of the night (averting a shut out).

The Cougars finished with a season record of 9-9-1

and a district record of: 4-6

The Cougars face Centreville for the first round of district play on Wednesday, May 18, at 6:30.  Hope to see you there!
