The Cougar offense came alive in the second inning with Kelsea Sinnett reaching first.  Abby Mills reached on a fielder’s choice, advanced to third on a Wolverine error, and plated Sinnett to put Oakton on the board and in the lead.  Angie Noviello’s single scored Mills to bring the score to 2-0. 

The Wolverines came back at the bottom of the second to even the score.  With runners on first and second, Clifford doubled, scoring the first run.  Adding to the suspense, lead-off McHugh’s infield ground-out plated their second run.

Entering the third with a score of 2-2, the Cougars could not get on base.  West Potomac answered back with a single from their lead-off, followed by the next batter reaching on a bunt.  Picini reached on error, which scored their third run (3-2).  With a full count, bases loaded, and 2 outs, Allison Davis struck out Clifford to end the inning.

Action resumed in the fifth inning.  Emily Corridon reached on a walk, and Emily Krisanda singled.  Davis singled, plating Corridon to even the score.  In the bottom, Davis retired three in a row, maintaining the score at 3-3 entering the sixth.

The Cougars shook things up in the sixth inning.  Jory Yates singled and Becky Cerva entered as a courtesy runner.  Kelsea Sinnett doubled.  Mill’s RBI ground-out plated Cerva.  Angie Noviello’s single plated Sinnett for the final assurance run of the game (5-3).

Defensive highlights:  Pitcher Allison Davis struck out 8 of the 31 batters in 7 innings of play.  The Cougars worked well defensively with flies to center caught by Corridon,and a nice snag by Sinnett at third.

The Northern Region Softball Tournament quarter-final win is a historical victory for the Lady Cougars!  They advance to semi-finals against Westfield on Wednesday, June 1, at 5:00 pm at Robinson High School.  We hope to see you cheering for their victory!
