OAKTON ADVANCES IN REGIONAL TOURNAMENT WITH WIN OVER MCLEAN

The Cougars hosted the Highlanders in the first round of the Regional Tournament.

The Cougar defense retired the first three batters, and though the Highlanders mustered up a few hits in the second inning, the next three batters were retired and the runners were left stranded.  In the third, the Highlanders scored their only run (unearned) on a Cougar overthrow.  A great backhand snag by junior short stop Emily Krisanda prevented a potential hit in the fourth.  Sophomore pitcher Allison Davis struck out 7 of the 29 batters she saw.

The Cougars came out hitting the ball, but did not start their rally until the third inning.  Senior left fielder Angie Noviello led-off with a walk, and advanced on junior right fielder Mary Kate Mehegan’s bunt.  Senior center fielder Emily Corridon’s SAC moved them to scoring position.  Sophomore second baseman Becky Cerva’s single to right field scored Noviello.  Mehegan was plated by Davis’ single putting the Cougars in the lead (2-1).  In the fifth, Davis smashed a bouncer double to the fence, and Krisanda added an off-the-wall double plating Davis for an added insurance run (3-1).

Other hits:  singles by Davis and sophomore first baseman Alana Peters.

Next up:  The Cougars continue in the Northern Regional Tournament and will face Hayfield a 1pm on Monday, 5/28, at Falls Church High School.
