Cougars Stung by the Herndon Hornets, 0-15
The Cougars lost in a run-rule-shortened game to the Herndon Hornets by a score of 0-15. The Hornets swarmed on the Cougars from the start and never let up, especially on defense.
The Cougar offense never got going, producing only four singles by Becky Cerva, Alana Peters, Sami Bassett, and Jenna Sharer. The Cougars put a runner in scoring position only once, when Sharer’s single moved Basset to second base in the fourth inning.
The Cougar defense was also flat. Several Cougars were manning unfamiliar positions to fill in for injured comrades, which increased the error count, and the Cougar pitching staff had an off night and walked an unexpected number of Hornet batters.
To their credit, the Hornets played flawless defense, making zero errors while producing 14 outs on Cougar grounders and fly balls. Hornet starting pitcher Katherine Milow pitched a shutout, striking out one, allowing four hits, and walking only two.
