Cougars Pecked by Seahawks

In their second regular season game, the Oakton Cougars lost to the South Lakes Seahawks by the score of 13 to 1.  The game was played at Hayfield Secondary School as the second game of a Saturday double header in the annual Hayfield Spring Tournament, and the Cougars were visiting team based on a coin toss.  Due to tournament time limits, the game concluded after five innings.

The Cougar offense struggled against South Lake’s talented starting pitcher Tess Rayle, who struck out 8, walked none, and allowed 4 hits in the five-inning game.

Only two Cougar batters managed to get hits.  Center fielder Emily Kamienski went 2-for-3 with a single and an RBI double that drove in Oakton left fielder Linda Lyons, who had reached first base on a dropped third strike.  And, pitcher Taylor Fay went 2-for-2, with two singles against the Seahawks.  Fay had a great day overall, going 4-for-5, with two doubles in the earlier game against Marshall.

The Cougars made several nice plays on defense, including a double play by third baseman Marissa Sanzone, who caught a screaming line drive that was heading into the SS-3B gap, and then alertly threw to first base to catch the Seahawk runner before she could get back.
