Warhawks Shutout the Cougars
The Oakton Cougars were shutout by the Madison Warhawks 13 – 0 in a non-conference game. The game was played on a sunny Saturday afternoon as part of the multi-sport, cross-town tourney between Oakton and Madison, which included baseball and lacrosse games in addition to softball.
The Cougar bats essentially could not connect with the pitches thrown by Madison’s talented starter Katie Vannicola, who has committed to play for Georgetown University. The lone exception was Cougar second baseman Georgia Brandt, who placed a single into left field in the third inning. The strong pitching and error-free defense of the talented Warhawks team kept all other Cougars off the bases, save one who reached on a walk.
On defense the Cougars played well for the first three innings, limiting the hard-hitting Madison offense to one run. As the game progressed, however, the Madison bats started to produce more hits and score more runs, aided by three Cougar errors.
