Bulldogs Tree the Cougars

The Oakton Cougars lost at home to the Westfield Bulldogs by the score of 8 – 1.

The Cougars suffered a high error count, yet they also made several good plays on defense.  The Cougar outfield combined to make seven outs as left fielder Danni Nicholls made two catches, center fielder Emily Kamienski made four catches, including a grass-stained, diving catch in the sixth inning, and right fielder Nicole Berube made one catch.  Catcher Allie Welham caught two pop fouls for outs, one of which required her to run around the plate umpire as the ball dropped right behind him.  And, shortstop Sami Bassett turned a nice double play in the second inning when she corralled a line drive hit at her feet and then fired to first base to catch the Bulldog runner before she could get back.

The Cougars managed only three hits against Westfield’s pitcher Jenna McKeown, and they all came from the Oakton outfielders.  Kamienski, Nicholls, and Berube all hit singles.  And, the Cougars’ lone run was scored by Nicholls, who was driven in from third base on an RBI grounder by DP Katie Edwards.
