Hawks Handle Cougars in Tourney Game
In the first game of a Monday double header in the annual Hayfield Spring Tournament, the Oakton Cougars lost to the Hayfield Hawks by the score of 13 to 1. The game was played on a sunny but chilly, 40-degree morning that warmed to near 50 degrees by game’s end. The game ended after six innings due to the tournament time limit.
The Hawks played solid defense that kept the Cougars off the bases and squelched all but one of the Cougars’ scoring threats. The Cougars’ lone run came when catcher Kelly Dunlap hit a blooper single to the outfield and then advanced to second base on wild pitch. From there, right fielder Rachel Lee drove her in by hitting a double down the left field line.
The Cougars played well on defense, making only one error against the hard-hitting Hawks team when the ball was hit to them. The Hawks offense, however, hit many balls into the gaps, including three triples and four doubles, and the Cougars simply could not keep pace.
