Rams Beat the Cougars, 1-12

In their second meeting of this season, the Robinson Rams beat the visiting Oakton Cougars by the score of 1-12.  The game was close for four innings, and then Robinson broke it open to win via the 10-run rule in the bottom of the fifth inning.  The loss drops the Cougars’ overall record to 5 wins, 11 losses and their conference record to 2 wins, 6 losses.

The Cougars opened the scoring in their first at-bat when right fielder Rachel Lee dropped a single into center field, stole second base, advanced to third on a sac bunt by center fielder Linda Lyons, and scored on a wild pitch.  Robinson answered back in the bottom of the inning with two unearned runs after a Cougar error and a single, leaving the Cougars trailing 1-2.

Both teams played good defense and exhibited good pitching during innings two through four.  The Cougars threatened in the top of the third inning when pitcher Natalie Felix led off with a single to center field, and Lyons followed with a single to left-center field.  Felix rounded second and tried for third base on Lyons’s hit, but the Rams centerfielder made a nice throw to third, and Felix was tagged out.  Third baseman Cassie Brazinsky followed that play with an infield single, but Lyons and Brazinsky were stuck on base when the next Cougar grounded out.

After keeping the Cougars scoreless in the top of the fifth inning, despite another single by Felix, the Rams went on a hitting streak and scored 10 runs in the bottom of the inning.  The denouement came when the Rams’ Danielle Hugney hit a walk-off, 3-RBI homer over the center field fence.

The Cougs are schedule to play their last two regular season conference games against Chantilly at home on Monday, (which is also Senior Night), and against Westfield away on Tuesday.  The Conference Playoffs start on Friday.
