The Oakton Cougars have already been busy on the golf course this summer.

Led by senior Graham Lawyer's third-place individual finish, the high school team placed third in the team competition at the two-day, 36-hole Servpro Invitational at Twin Lakes Golf Course in Clifton.

Lawyer shot 73-70-143. The 70 was a two-under-par score.

“I took a little break from golf earlier this summer, so I was really happy with the way the tournament turned out,” said the co-captain, who wants to play golf in college. “I think that break helped me. I played well and my putting was on the second day.”

The tournament included 28 teams and some 140 golfers.

Westfield won the team title and Centreville was second. Oakton's score was 304-299-603.

Also counting in the team scoring for Oakton was senior co-captain Amanda Steinhagen with a first-round 70. She had qualified for a junior LPGA tournament and did not play in the second round. In addition, Oakton senior Morgan Woolner shot a 76 in the second round, sophomore Mason Hauser shot 80-73-153 and sophomore Trevor Herrinton 81-80-161.

At Oakton's own 12-team, 18-hole Cougar Classic prior to the Servpro, Oakton was third with a 326 team score. Steinhagen shot 78 and Lawyer 79.

“The heat got to me on the back nine and wore me out that day,” Lawyer said in regard to the Cougar Classic.

Oakton plays in the Concorde District, which includes a number of talented teams like Westfield, Centreville, Chantilly and Herndon.

Only the top two teams in the district move on to the Northern Region tournament, with a possibility of advancing to the Group AAA state tourney.

“This district is very strong, so we will have to play well to advance,” Oakton coach Jack Masich said.

Oakton faces Westfield this coming week in a dual match, then plays in another tournament next week in Midlothian, Va., near Richmond.

NOTE: Lawyer just missed qualifying for the state tournament as an individual the past two years. “My goal is to get to states this year and play well there,” he said.
