Oakton seniors Amanda Steinhagen and Graham Lawyer.
Graham Lawyer saved his best performance in the Concorde District tournament for his last, and nearly won the individual championship in the process.

The Oakton High School senior carded a 4-under, 71-69-140 total to finish second by a stroke to Chantilly's Victor Monte (67-72-139). The 36-hole competition was played Sept. 22 and 23 on the par-72 Lakes Course at Twin Lakes in Clifton.

Lawyer's final round of 69 included five birdies and an eagle. A bogey on the 18th hole prevented him from tying Monte for the lead.

“I just ran it [par putt] by the edge, but I can't complain. I was putting well and I played well,” Lawyer said.

The 140 total was Lawyer's best by 12 strokes in the four years he has played on the Concorde tournament. As a result of finishing second, he qualifies for the 36-hole Northern Region tournament.

“That was my big goal, I wanted to make the region,” Lawyer said.

Lawyer's round of 71 included a couple of birdies on the final few holes after a trio of bogeys to begin the back nine.

“I was able to finish strong,” he said.

Oakton senior Amanda Steinhagen, who has verbally committed to play Division I college golf at Longwood University, also qualified for the region. She shot 73-74-147 in the district tourney. Her round of 73 included two eagles.

“I had a rocky two days,” Steinhagen said. “My game wasn't as consistent as it had been the last couple of months. I was not able to get as many birdies.”

The front nine of Steinhagen's final round included nine straight pars, then she had an up-and-down back nine.

As for attending Longwood, Steinhagen likes that the school is close enough to home, yet far enough away, and she was impressed with the program. Plus, there is a good chance she could play a lot as a freshman.

“Everything seemed to click when I visited,” she said.

Also for Oakton at the district tournament, sophomore Jackson Lizardo shot 82-73-155, sophomore Mason Hauser 82-78-161, senior Michael Schallcross 80-86-166, and junior Michael McNamee 84-87-171.

Oakton tied with Robinson in the team competition with a 306-294-600 total. Westfield won and Chantilly was second.
