Oakton Cougars Fight Hard Against Woodson with Mixed Results

The second week of the 2019-2020 swim and dive season was highlighted by the much-anticipated dual meet between Oakton and Woodson. The boys teams, which placed first and second in last year’s class 6 state championship meet battled back and forth throughout the night with the Oakton boys defending their state title by narrowly pulling out an 11-point victory 163 to 152. For the second straight season, the Oakton girls fought hard despite missing some of their top swimmers, but lost 148 to 167.

The boys were led by double winners, Graham Evers and Joe Wong. Evers, a sophomore, cruised to victories in both 200 and 100 freestyle, while Wong, a senior, won with photo finishes in 200 individual medley and 100 breaststroke. Junior Chase Koller picked up a win in the 500 freestyle, second place finish in 200 free, and led a stunning comeback anchor leg in the 400 freestyle relay to clinch the meet for the Cougars. On the diving board, junior Josh Shipley turned in the best performance of his life, qualifying for Regions, and obliterating his lifetime best by over 43 points.

After missing the first meet, Brynn Curtis kicked off her senior season with two easy wins in 200 free and 500 free. Freshman Agnese Lasmane, in her first meet, picked up two second place finishes in 200 and 100 freestyle. Maddie Reese, a junior, had her best dual meet performance for the Cougars on the diving board, scoring 234 points and narrowly finishing second against the defending class 6 state champion.
