This win officially makes the Cougars the conference runners-up and sets us up for the region team tourney later in the month!!  This is an accomplishment is a very competitive district.

Next week we begin the conference individual tournament on Monday, May 8th at Oakotn HS.  It will continue through May 11th.

COUGARS WALLOP WESTFIELD 8-1

Not a lot to report other than routine matches with our COUGARS taking charge and owning their courts! Singles and doubles went off without any drama other than the bulldogs 1 dubs retiring with a player injury.  A friendly match from the start, the team took care of business.

We head to Robinson tomorrow for what should be the game of the season.  Two equally matched teams with the same record....one will leave the conference champs.....

Congratulations to our 3rd doubles (the Avery's) for being named "athlete's of the week". at Oakton  Well earned after being the closers in several of the last matches.

Thanks as always to our best fans, our parents, and also the visiting French students being hosted by our very own Rohan!

COUGARS SHRED CHANTILLY 7-2 TO CELEBRATE SENIOR NIGHT!

It was a full on party atmosphere at our match vs. Chantilly this afternoon!  Our 4 seniors got some much deserved recognition from the school administration and athletic trainer.  The lineup was called and the match got off to a good start.  Singles 3-6 all were up early with serious focus and determination.  The team definitely had a goal.....Courts 1 and 2 however had their work cut out for them.  Mo on 1 was up 7-4 and let the lead slip away due to back pain.   He refused to default the match, was seen by the trainer at 7-8, and fought to hold one more time.  Ryan on 2 was down early to Josh and started making a comeback in the later stages of the set.  Courts 3,4,5 and 6 all came off with big wins and we go into dubs 4-2.  We only need one for the team W.

Court 3 went first as those guys had finished singles early.....the Avery's went out with confidence and worked their way through the match without flinching.  These seniors put the match away with their 10-2 win!

Meanwhile our court 2 team, Nick and Tyler, played some great tennis to also add to the team score.  With Mo out for doubles we looked around to find a partner for Ryan on court 1.  Hmmmm....Kevin Xu came up the lucky winner and the match was on.  The Cougars we absolutely dominant!  The scorecard kept turning and adding 2 games at a time to our boys.  Match over....we sweep doubles!

Cake was served to hungry players and everyone else in the area:)  Senior boards were given to the 4, the balloons of course had already made a getaway, and good times were shared!

Thanks to everyone who made this a VERY special night: Gretchen, Sara, Frank, Maria, - and extra thanks to Lisa O'Connor for the full-on feast for the team and adult snacks as well.

SAYONARA C'VILLE.....9-0 TO THE COUGARS!

The team made good today by locking down every court in the match!  Focus and getting the job done was the order of the day.  Congratulations to the varsity players.  Our exhibition players also had a great day playing good solid tennis!

The Jiang family kept everyone moving with pizza and snacks and our die-hard fans came out in the unexpectedly cold afternoon to cheer the team on.  Thank you!!

Practice tomorrow, and then on to Chantilly on Friday and SENIOR NIGHT......

FASTEN YOUR SEATBELT.....

FLINT HILL FLOUNDERS, COUGARS FEAST 9-0!!

On a perfect spring day, our Cougars take the courts at Flint Hill for the annual match.  Doubles play first, (Mo -out with injury) the Nguyen bros. on 1, the Avery's on 2, and Tyler/K.Xu on 3.   All three were competitive matches, but were ultimately dominated by Oakton.

Singles followed immediately with Ryan, Nick, AV, Tyler, AO, and K Liu.  Everyone in attendance was treated to an exhibition of how to hold and close by these PLAYERS.  Unflinching and relentless points, games, and sets. To date, this season, by far the most complete performance by the team.

The MVP for this match is undeniably Nick for his comeback in singles.  Down 1-4, he summoned his courage and will to win and played the best tennis of his career at OHS!

CONGRATULATIONS

Not to be outdone by the varsity matches, our exhibition players also left their mark at Flint Hill by being focused and determined.  Nitin/K. Liu on 4, Dustin/K. Nu on 5, and David/Lawrence on 6 all represented well.

In the final singles, Rohan took out his opponent in a solid win, and PK fought and learned.....

Thanks to the Nanduri's for the abundance of food, the other team was hungry....

Our superfans (disguised as moms) were in fine form and really added to the atmosphere at the match!

Eyes on the sky for tomorrow.  If we have a window we will play Herndon @ 4 away.

COUGARS TAKE A BIG BITE OUT OF THE BULLDOGS! 7-2

Westfield came to play this afternoon.  The Cougars were ready and waiting.

After several long and protracted matches with Chantilly and Robinson, the team just went to work and put the match to rest in short order.  Nitin directly subbed in at 1 singles for an injured Mo, and took a game off Michael Lu:)  Both Avery's, on 5 and 6 were off first with 10-0 scores, and Ryan on 2 followed within minutes.  That's 3.....Nick on 3 played a consistent opponent who gave very little away and played the big points a smidge better, Tyler on 4 was up early and then even before he ran away with his match.  That's 4.....

Doubles saw Mo/Ryan play Michael/Neehar on 1 for a back and forth race to ten.  Cougars win with room to spare!  Courts 2 and 3 both got the brooms out for the dubs sweep!  Nice win to start the week.

Tomorrow will take us to Flint Hill for an out of conference match.  Come cheer if you can and GO COUGARS!

COUGARS PLAY THE RAMS INTO THE 2ND DAY AND COME UP A COURT SHORT

After a very competitive match with Robinson, on the heels of Chantilly, our Cougars came up a court short with a 6-10 on 3 doubles.  Last Thursday saw the team have a very promising start in singles with Ryan, Nick, and Tyler up through mid-set.  Mo on 1, was suffering with a wrist injury that kept him from hitting his 2 hander, and was playing an opponent that took advantage.  AV on 4 got in a deep hole early before finding his rhythm.  He starting winning games and pushing back.   AO on 6 was down 1-4 before he started doing work and getting his game on.  Fast forward.....Ryan gets a break, then 2, and zooms to the finish.  Tyler on 5 also maintains his lead and is off court with a solid W.  It's 2-1.   Nick on 3 drops serve at 6-5, and finds himself facing an opponent who has the momentum.  Across the courts, AO is making headway and now in the lead with a break.  Things are winding down.  AV goes down fighting and knows that the slow start made the difference.  Nick is also losing ground and his match is over.  It's 2-3 and the final singles court is playing out.  Court 6 with AO is down to the final games.  Our Cougar brought his best and served out the set with confidence and pride.  3 all going into dubs.

Court 1 with a steady Ryan and injured Mo get off to a solid start and really never faltered.  They have to work but play very well.  It's 4-3.  Nick/Tyler on 2, are up 6-3, and then 6-5, and then down 7-6.  the set gets away.....4 ALL.  For a second match in a row it's down to 3 subs...

The cougars drop the opening game to get down a break.  From there they hold, the match progresses,  and it starts getting late.  AV, serving at 5-7 doesn't hold and we stop play due to darkness.

Play resumes 4 days later with conditions replicated (other than darkness:).  Court 3, game count 5-8, cougars on close side with Rams serving.  Rams hold, we hold, Rams hold...Its over.  Too big a hole....

Win to Robinson.  Hate to lose but playing these tight matches will prepare the team for Regions!

Good food and FANS...Thanks

Busy week with Westfield tomorrow, Flint Hill on Wednesday, and Herndon on Thursday.

Please come cheer us on if you can!   GO COUGARS

SHAKEUP AT CHANTILLY!!! COUGARS WIN 5-4

After playing hard for 2 days, neither rain or shine could keep our Cougars from grabbing the win!  Day 1 saw the team taking singles 2, 4, and 6.  Ryan on 2, had a good solid match and opponent in Josh Melynk.  AV on 4, took down Justin Oh with unflinching aggression and focus, and K. Liu earned a win against Justin Wang by being steady and NEVER looking at anything but the ball the entire way to 10!

Doubles started under stormy skies and each court got 3 or 4 games in before the rain came.  We picked it up today with virtually an even match.  1 dubs with (a one handed Mo) and Ryan were either up or down a break for much of the match but edged ahead at the end for a terrific 10-8 victory! This was a hard fought win and was even sweeter considering one of their opponents... Court 2 with Nick/K. Liu were neck and neck for the first half of the match, but their opponents Josh/Keith really turned up the heat and outplayed our cougars.  It all came down to court 3 with the Avery's......They jumped up to a 4-1 lead, then it was 4-3 with the next card turn.  The team began pumping themselves up and getting LOUD.  The intensity earned them the next 3 games and Justin/Akhil couldn't make up the ground.  Strong serving and great communication brought these boys the winning court!

Coach Jo and I both feel this match is an indicator that the team is here to PLAY this season.

Thanks to our great parents and fans.  All the food and cheering makes a big difference!

Time to get ready for our next challenging match tomorrow at home.  See you @ 4:)

CEASE-FIRE AT C'VILLE

Our cougars stopped swinging when the last court was won!  Another 9-0 victory with ALL exhibitions also bringing home W's.  MOSTLY keeping their composure, the team worked on focus and finishing in preparation for a tougher week ahead.  Chantilly on tuesday and Robinson on thursday.   With Robinson winning at Chantilly last night it should be a very competitive couple of matches.

The boys feasted on bagels and breadsticks in the score line, but had plenty of room left for K. Nu's pizza! Thanks to the Nguyen's!

As usual, thanks to our fans who came out to cheer.  Let's see if we can get a larger contingent out for next week.....

HERNDON FALLS HARD TO THE COUGARS 9-0

Coming off a big win at Battlefield last night, this afternoon was a continuation of dominance.  Focus was the name of the game as all 9 courts went to work.  Mo, Ryan, Nick, AV, Patrick, and AO brought in single's wins.  Doubles followed with Mo/Ryan, Nick/K Liu, and AV/AO staying the course and adding to the team score.

Our exhibition players also contributed to the overall match by dropping barely a game!!

Good for us to enjoy early success as we know next week will bring considerably tougher opponents.

Thanks to the Hyun's for the Panera snack!  There was no shortage of food for the hungry cougars and to the disappointment of some unnamed players, these were the only bagels that were served.........

BLOODSHED AT BATTLEFIELD!!

Bottom line is our Cougars took no prisoners this afternoon.  All courts were victorious and everyone played! Aside from some pretty good competition on courts 1 and 2, the matches were straightforward.  The team kept its focus and purpose.  We were lucky to play at a school with 9 courts with lights and a friendly hosts!

Tomorrow we play Herndon at home @ 4:00.  Please come out and watch and cheer us on.  The weather should be good.

Thanks also to Lisa O'Connor for getting the ball rolling with the USTA/High School point system.  If your son has a USTA number and wants to add to his ranking please contact Lisa with the information.

Also thanks to Maria Nguyen for getting the players awesome uniforms!  I know it made them play better today:)

SCRIMMAGE WITH TJ

For those who weren't able to come out last night, you missed some very competitive tennis!  Our Cougars were focused and relentless in their matches against a strong T.J. team.  Each court had it's own action with Ryan's on court 2 being especially dramatic. What a battle!  The top of the lineup had a strong showing and the rest of the courts also competed well. Singles went so long that darkness crept in and kept our 1 and 2 doubles from finishing, but 3 dubs had a strong set:)  Most exhibition players got some play in and with daylight savings time happening this weekend, we will do better next week!

Thanks to all our fans, and also to the Olsen's for the sandwiches and snacks that kept our team fighting.....

SEASON OPENER WITH WOODSON GETS RAINED OUT

The good news is that we got a dry run in and all the new players now know how to set up for a match!  Bad news is that we only got three games in before the courts became too slippery to continue.  Shout out to our team for being patient throughout the afternoon.  We are aiming to reschedule for tomorrow, Thursday.  If Woodson can get a bus we will continue where we left off.  Thanks to our fans for coming out on a rainy day, and of course to the Nguyen's for making the day better with pizza!

TRYOUTS FOR TUESDAY-FRIDAY 3:15-5:00 ON COURT AT OHS

We were treated to a spectacular first day of tryouts on Monday.  Warm and no wind.  Unheard of in the last 10 years......

All new players were evaluated on stroke production yesterday.  The remainder of the week will be a series of short matches with new players playing each other in the early rounds, and according to their results, then playing returning players. What we are looking for here is the players ability to compete, apply singles strategy, and control their mental game.  First round of cuts may happen after a player has had at least 3 full days of tryouts, with the remaining team selection to happen on Friday immediately after practice.

Team practice will begin on Monday Feb. 27th @ 3:15
